The european hare is common all across Europe. It can be found everywhere in Hungary, but their number in the big game counties of Transdanubia is minimal, their true home are the Great Plains. The best hare grounds can be found in Békés, Csongrád, Szolnok, and Heves counties.
Its population density can sometimes reach 50 specimens / 100 ha on agricultural areas in spring but it is less in bigger forestlands not reaching 10 specimens / 100 ha. Many hares do not move more than 1 km away from their place of birth, 2/3 of the juveniles stay within a 500 m circle until they reach maturity. Hares only feed on plants, their foodrange is very widespread.
Their hunt is probably the most tiresome among small game species since they can only be hunted on driven hunts successfully. On these people often have to walk several kilometers in the plough to succeed. On these hare hunts 20-30 hunters and twice as much beaters surround the often 100-200 ha areas in a circle or U-shape and as the lines close in they try to drive the hares out of the 50 cm deep furrows of the autumn plough and shoot them. In dry or cold weather the daily bag can reach up to 200-300 hares on good grounds. If less hunters are present the hunt can be combined with pheasant seeking hunts but the bag will also be less.
